Universal Pictures and Illumination have just given the green light the very-expected sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and announced that its title will be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The animation is scheduled to premiere in U.S. cinemas on April 3 of the year 2026, while it will be released in Japan on April 24 of the same year and in various other countries over the month. The news was conveyed at the Nintendo Direct conference that, among other things, briefly introduced the movie with a short trailer, conveying the idea that the movie is not only its predecessor but also the start, and in fact, the entire history of the Mario video game series.
According to Variety, the teaser metaphorically depicted Mario suddenly awakening from his nap under a tree, thereby the camera gradually unveiling the reality of the scene showing Princess Peach's castle far behind. They next visualized the whole severity of the cosmos extending far beyond Mario's next-door princess and so escaping from the Mushroom Kingdom. At that point, the audience noticed little bits and pieces of such usual characters like Monty Mole digging the earth, Cheep Cheeps swimming in a brook, and Toads wandering the castle yard. While the cosmic pictures combined with the silence did not directly state the plot of the clip, it was clear that the story would be dramatically expanded by jumping off the Mushroom Kingdom into space.
Chris Pratt is absolutely going to provide the voice of Mario again, despite the uproar that his casting was greeted with back in 2022 when most fans thought that he would never be able to set a good example for the sonic voice of the Mario games by Charles Martinet. Besides him, Anya Taylor-Joy will also provide the voice for Princess Peach, Charlie Day for Luigi, Jack Black for Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key for Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson for Kamek. Universal has already announced that the essential cast is returning, but there will be new characters and additional voice actors to be unveiled before the release of the movie. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (The Original) is a successful movie that was released internationally in April 2023 and recorded a total of $1.36 billion in the worldwide box office. It has been the best-performing movie based on the video game that has broken all the records for the rest of the year. In addition to Mario, Nintendo is broadening its movie career with a motion picture adaptation of the Legend of Zelda series by director Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) which will be released in March 2027, and they are collaborating with Sony Pictures to produce it. This move towards different genres indicates Nintendo’s increasing dedication to creating a movie portfolio built around its most famous characters, thus the rumors are growing that the audience may see a shared Nintendo cinematic universe with Link, Samus, or Donkey Kong appearing in their own movies.
